HIstory Of Oyi LGA.

Oyi Local Government Area (LGA) is located in Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria. It was created in the 1980s by the Civilian Administration of Chief Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo. The LGA takes its name from the Oyi River, which flows through it.

Myth

The early history of Oyi LGA is shrouded in myth and legend. However, it is known that the Olus were a powerful and influential group in the region. They were known for their skill in agriculture and their mastery of ironworking. The people of Oyi LGA are of the Olu subgroup of the Eri-Awka Igbo. The Olus are the distinct river-side Igbo people of the lower Anambra plain. They trace their origin to Eri, the legendary founder of the Igbo people.

19th Century

In the 19th century, Oyi LGA was a major center of the slave trade. The Olus were forced to sell their own people into slavery in order to pay taxes to the British colonial government. After the abolition of slavery, Oyi LGA began to develop economically. The Olus began to grow cash crops such as cocoa and palm oil. They also began to build schools and hospitals.
